Advice and Complaints Unit

We provide telephone advice

 

The Advice and Complaints Unit operates an inquiry line each Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 4.30pm (excluding public holidays). Staff of the Unit will inform you of your rights and responsibilities under fair trading legislation.

If you are unable to resolve a problem directly with a business or trader, you may wish to call the Office for some tips on how to resolve your complaint.

Please note: You must approach the business or trader about the problem you have been experiencing before contacting the Advice and Complaints Unit.

If your complaint warrants further investigation, you will be asked to lodge a written complaint with the Office.

Compliance Unit

We investigate breaches of fair trading laws, investigate the safety of goods and take compliance action

 

Sometimes complaints that come to our attention involve breaches of fair trading legislation or codes of practice. When this occurs, the Compliance Unit may take compliance action. This action may range from:

  • cautioning the trader
  • asking the trader to substantiate claims being made
  • publically naming the trader
  • referring the trader to a dispute resolution committee
  • accepting and enforcing written undertakings received from the trader where breaches of a code of practice have occurred
  • taking prosecution action
 

The choice of compliance action will depend on the trader's history, the severity of the breach and the level of consumer detriment.

Trade Measurement Unit

We ensure accurate measurement in the ACT

  The Trade Measurement Unit monitors the marketplace to detect inaccurate measures. The Unit also provides certifications for legal metrology and quality assurance purposes.

Business and Community Relations Unit

We inform the community of their rights and obligations under legislation administered by the Office.

  The Business and Community Relations Unit promotes consumer and business confidence by providing effective consumer affairs information in a variety of ways such as distribution of material at promotions, attendance at community events, media releases, media and television exposure.

Secretariat and Support Unit

We administer various regulatory bodies to discharge their regulatory responsibilities.

  As well as administering various regulatory bodies, the Secretariat and Support Unit provides secretariat services to the Liquor Licensing Board, the Fair Trading Advisory Committee, the OFT Compliance and Enforcement Committee and the various committees for the Codes under the Fair Trading Act.
